RECORDING A VIDEOCLIP ABOUT OUR CLIL E-PROJECT

Hello there!

Here I am again to talk to you about the new ICT challenge that my group: AnaVictorInmaLola, Natalia and I, have recently taken.

This time, we had to accomplish two interrelated tasks: creating a storyboard that served us as the blueprints for a video about our CLIL e-project, and making that video. To that end, we firstly had to think about a goal that we would like to achieve with our project and, as I told you in my last post, after weighing up several possibilities, we finally agreed on the following:

To learn about the physical and political features and some of the most distinguishing representations of the European countries

So, now that we had our goal, we were ready to start!

First of all, we had to think of a tool to make our storyboard with. After having had a looked at different ones, we decided to take our teacher's advice and use "Storyboard That". This is a great online tool if you want to create a story for your students or just present any kind of information to them in the form of a comic strip. It is very easy to use and it offers many possibilities for creating an eye-catching story. Some of the positive aspects that we found about "StoryboardThat" are:

  • You can choose the number of vignettes that you would like your story to have, as well as their background.
  • You can also choose between a wide range of characters and even change their appearance (you can make them look happy, sad.... you can change the color in their clothes...etc).
  • You can add text to your vignettes in the form of speech bubbles and in many other shapes.
However, we found some other aspects about this tool that, from our point of view, would need to be improved. For instance, we did not like the fact that the work you do is not automatically saved. This means that you have to be saving it all the time yourself, and even though the webpage frequently reminds you to do so, it would be fantastic if this could be done automatically. Another important fact is that, unless you have a premium account, you are not allowed to do many things, such as including pictures, something that would come in very handy to customize your story as you like.

All in all, we can say from our experience that StoryboardThat is a great tool to use in the classroom. We can use it to communicate anything to our students in a more visual way that will definitely help them understand, especially when communicating in English. For example, we could use it to help our youngest students to get used and remember the class and school's routines, or we could use it with students with special needs, such as autistic children, who constantly need plenty of visual support for learning.

Now that we had our storyboard ready, it was time to make the video about it. That meant that we had to record ourselves performing the scenes in our storyboard. I must confess, at the beginning I was embarrased just to think about it, but in the end it all turned out to be quite fun! We had a great time and a good laugh.

We decided to choose Imovie for the edition of our video. None of us knew how this app worked until that moment, but after figuring it out, we were glad we had chosen it. Among the many positive aspects that we can draw from it, I believe it is important to highlight the following:

  • It is a very intuitive tool, which means that if you have never used it before, you will quickly learn how to do it.
  • It allows you to choose the music you want to add to your video and its volume, which you can change along the scenes as you please.
  • It also allows you to add pictures and videos to it, so you can customize it as you like.
The only negative aspect about this app, if any, would be that the choice of the sizes of the font to use is a bit limited.

Once we had our storyboard and video ready, we decided to take part in another nationwide educational collaborative project: The ESL times. Let's hope they like our work!

Would you like to see the final outcomes of our group  work for this two-in-one challenge too?

Here is our storyboard, which you will also find here

Made with Storyboard That

Also, as you can see in our storyboard, we created an Inphographic about Norway as an example of what our students would have to do for this project. I include it here so you can see it better, but you can also click here to have a look at it on the web.

And finally, here is our video. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as we did recording it. It was lots of fun! And if you want to watch it in Youtube, just click here

That's all for today! I hope you liked the work we did for this challenge and once again, thank you for reading!
